5 Tips for a Blissful Bedroom

It’s the room where we do all our dreaming, so our bedrooms need to be calm and welcoming spaces that encourage relaxation and rejuvenation. We asked the experts for their 5 best tips to creating a serene scene.

Paint is the fastest and easiest way to update a space, but choosing the wrong hue can take an emotional toil in the bedroom. Rich, deep shades like red and orange can over-stimulate, leaving you feeling restless and irritated. Safer choices are white, neutrals or pastel shades, with colour brought in through bedlinen and accessories. If your room receives plenty of natural light, look to cool tones (they have a blue undertint); if it lacks light, add heat with warm shades (undertinted with yellow).

Quality counts when it comes to beds. You spend almost half your life asleep, so it’s vital to choose a base and mattress that will properly support and care for your spine. From there, bedlinen and a decorative bedhead or frame can transform the bed into a real feature in the room.

Clutter is the enemy of calm, so sleek and purposeful storage is a must in the boudoir. If you have the space for built-ins, have them custom-designed to meet the needs of your wardrobe. Bedside tables and dressers should be fitted with plenty of drawers, trunks at the  end of the bed can make a design statement, and open shelving can be used to show off a rotating display of favourite trinkets.

In the bedroom, choose artworks that make you feel good, be it through their colours, the image itself. Bedrooms are the perfect place to hang your favourite framed photographs, a large canvas above the bed, or a series of artworks. Plants and flowers are another beautiful way to add personality, introduce a mannequin and dress it in your favourite pieces, or display of your favourite jewellery, perfume or cosmetics jars on the dresser.

If you look at the beds in luxury hotels, they’re all immaculately dressed with crisp linen, beautiful coverlets and an assortment of cushions. For a luxury finish, choose pure cotton or bamboo-blended cotton in a thread count of at least 300. A woollen quilt can also provide a key layer comfort – we love Australian Wool Quilts on sale now at OZSALE.
